Laureen (Lori) Burda, PhD

Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Burda is a licensed clinical psychologist and former Clinical Director of Advanced Behavioral Centers of DuPage, a psychiatric and counseling practice with offices in Hinsdale and Oakbrook Terrace. Dr. Burda received her doctoral degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

During her graduate training, she worked as a research assistant in a federally-funded smoking cessation program for several years. She received specialty training in behavioral medicine during her clinical internship at the University of Chicago Medical Center where she worked with cancer patients. She went on to do post-doctoral training at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, an affiliate of Tufts Medical School. As a post-doctoral fellow, she worked in consult-liaison services, providing evaluation and treatment services for medical patients in the hospital. She also worked at the Neighborhood Health Clinic where she consulted directly with physicians about the psychological needs of their medical patients in the community.

Dr. Burda has over 15 years of experience working in health psychology treating individuals who have medical illnesses such as diabetes, chronic pain, obesity, gastrointestinal disorders, and cancer. she performs pre-operative evaluations of surgical candidates for bariatric weight loss surgery for Rush and Northwestern bariatric programs.

Dr. Burda uses techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery to help individuals manage stress and to identify stressors that may be exacerbating their medical condition. She takes a collaborative approach with clients, actively encouraging them to participate in their own journey of healing and coping with their medical problem.
